Water can be radiation-dangerous if radioactive substances are dissolved in it. SanPiN 2.1.4.1116-02 informs us that the effective dose received with the annual consumption of packaged water should not exceed 0.1 mSv. For reference: the radiation background at the Earth’s surface is 0.1 μSv / h. If we combine these data, it turns out that the effective dose load from radioactive substances dissolved in water should not exceed 10% of the background radiation. Let’s try to understand how radioactive substances get into drinking water. The first way is man-made pollution. Dumps of radioactive waste and equipment as well as effluents of various physicochemical laboratories and factories serve as a cause for this. History knows a lot of examples of irresponsible behavior at factories, when radioactive substances get into the environment. There is also a natural way for radioactive substances to enter the water. First of all, water poisoning occurs due to emanation of an inert radioactive gas of radon. Radon itself is not seriously dangerous for health, but the products of radioactive decay of this gas (which is polonium) can be very dangerous.
The most powerful emanation of radon (all other things being equal) occurs in artesian wells. Filters can accumulate both radon and polonium. If filters are not changed in a timely manner, then at some point they can become a source of a serious radiation threat. Measuring radiation in water is a very difficult task; many laboratories cannot do it with sufficient accuracy. Therefore, one of the solutions in this situation is using of water with a minimal risk of radiation poisoning. It can be, for example, water from some springs.
