Pitcher filters are perhaps the most controversial type of water filter. We will not consider specific manufacturers, because the problems described below are characteristic more or less for all filters of this type.
- One of the main problems with these filters is that it is very difficult to meet operational requirements. Many filters need to be constantly wet. But often people forget about this rule. If the contents of the filter dries, then for many filters this is critical!
- The second problem is the growth of microflora. Let’s make a mental experiment: we purify the water using a filter, but over time, substances that we managed to purify accumulates in the filter itself. And, in fact, this is a nutrient medium for microflora. Filters are usually located in the kitchen and near the stove. Very good: we also heat up the nutrient medium so that the microflora grows faster and more intensively. And of course there is always water – we pour it ourselves. Streams of water are not able to wash off all this microflora, because water is filtered quite slowly (this is not a flow filter). We get a pitcher filter with the function of incubating microorganisms.
- To all of the above, we can add that it is completely not clear how often you need to change the filter cartridge. The recommended terms for cartridge changing are some average terms, but each type / quality of water requires its own service life of cartridge.
If you cannot refuse using a pitcher filter, then:
- Change the cartridge at least as indicated in the instructions and even preferably more often!
